C45 – Surface water

C45 spring water

As many of you are aware, there has long been an issue with surface water on the C45 running down towards The Swan.  A natural spring appeared in the middle of the carriageway in 2020.  This was reported to Hampshire Highways, as a road safety issue, by the Parish Council and local residents.  In early 2021, repairs were carried out which mitigated the issue until Spring 2023.  Following local site clearance, using heavy machinery, and some pothole patching, the spring reappeared in the middle of the road.

Since then the Parish Council and local residents have lobbied Hampshire County Council repeatedly raising our concerns for the colder weather and the dangers of road ice.

Last week, a member of the Hampshire Highways team met with Cllr Sean Curry and Cllr Richard Carrow (Burghclere PC) at the site, to discuss the ongoing issues and the concerns of both Parish Councils and local residents.

Following this meeting, Hampshire Highways have committed to clear out the existing drainage and pipework and look to see if it possible to extend it.  They will also carry out road repairs near the area of the spring.

There isn’t a confirmed date for this work as yet, but we will publicise this once we know.
